Renovation Projects

Together with Campus Operations and Capital Project Management, Columbia Housing conducts annual upgrades and renovations of select residences. Highlights of past and planned projects are listed here by building.

Planned Projects

Carman

  • Over the summer of 2019, renovations will continue in the building on residential floors M - 6 including:
    • A new lounge across from the elevator on floors 3 - 6 
    • An ADA room added on each floor 
    • New 10-person suites at the end of floor 6, and a new 6-person suite at the east end of floors 2 – 5. 
    • New furniture 
    • New flooring, lighting and paint 
    • New bathrooms 
    • New fan coils 
    • New outlets with USB plugs 
    • Wireless door locks 
    • Water filling stations installed as well as additional upgrades to improve the appearance of these floors
  • Roof will be replaced.

East Campus

  • During summer 2019:
    • Building electrification project to be conducted and electric stoves with ovens to be installed within the suites.
    • Roof replacement work on the high rise and townhouses.
    • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) infrastructure work on the upper floor of both the high rise and townhouses.
    • Work is expected to be completed for the 2019-20 academic year.
  • Due to the summer renovation projects, no early arrivals are allowed for East Campus with any exception.

Wien

  • Renovations will continue in Wien during summer 2019 on floors 10 - 12, to include:
    • New flooring in single rooms
    • New vanities or new sinks and mirrors
    • Replacement of radiators
    • Entrance lighting upgraded
    • New floor lounges on certain floors
  • Due to the summer renovation projects, no early arrivals are allowed for Wien with any exceptions.

Completed Projects

Overall

  • Wireless added across all buildings; in 2014, access upgraded in Watt, Woodbridge, and 627 West 115th Street to provide better service. Ethernet connections no longer required across Columbia Housing residences
  • Water filling stations are installed in all residence halls; visit the Sustainability page for a complete location listing.

47 Claremont

  • In 2016, west half of building received new kitchen cabinets
  • Completed building upgrade of electric service in 2016
  • New front stoop with convenience ramp added in 2016
  • New basement lounge added in 2016
    • Air conditioning
    • Fitness room
    • Study room
    • Computer lab
    • New laundry room
  • Elevator overhauled and modernized in 2013
  • Select bathrooms renovated and converted from tubs to shower stalls. General refresh work conducted in all rooms as needed including painting, floor refinishing, etc
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

600 West 113th Street

  • In 2017, one elevator was replaced.
  • In 2015, renovations of floors 2 and 3 included:
    • All bathrooms were fully renovated
    • Suite D on both floors now have a small lounge with cable TV off the kitchen area
    • New flooring in hallways
    • New doors on student rooms
  • Kitchens renovated in 2013
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

627 West 115th Street

  • In 2015, the four ‘C’ suites were reconfigured to create one single and one double in each of the apartments.
  • In 2015, the basement lounge was furnished with new common area furniture.

Broadway

  • In 2017, desk chairs were replaced with new rolling chairs
  • In 2016, new fitness room added to 4th floor
  • In 2016, new 1st floor lounge furniture added
  • New cabinets and countertops installed in all kitchens in 2013

Carlton Arms

  • A new fitness room was created on the 10th floor in 2017.

Carman

  • In 2017 and 2018, renovations were made to floors 7 - 13 including:
    • A new lounge across from the elevator on each floor
    • An ADA room added on each floor
    • New 10-person suites at the end of each hall
    • New furniture
    • New flooring, lighting and paint
    • New bathrooms
    • New fan coils
    • Wireless locks on all suite and bedroom doors.
    • New outlets with USB plugs
    • Additional upgrades to improve the appearance of these floors
  • In 2016, new rolling desk chairs added throughout building
  • In 2015, lobby renovation included:
    • New ADA bath at building entry
    • New guard Desk
    • New paint and refinished flooring
    • New LED lighting
    • Computer lab relocated to first floor across from elevators
    • New vending area

​East Campus

  • In 2018, composting was added to East Campus with organics collection stations in the Recycling Stations. 
  • In 2016 and 2017, 50 suites were refreshed in all Townhouses. The work included:
    • Renovated kitchens with updated cabinets, flooring and lighting 
    • New bathroom finishes 
    • New flooring throughout 
    • New furniture throughout 
  • In 2015, floors 8 – 16 received new doors with electronic locks in the rooms and suites. All rooms and suites in East Campus now have electronic locks. 
  • In 2014, 20th floor renovations included new flooring and lighting in rooms and corridor, kitchen and bathroom renovations, new furnishings in the suite common areas. New doors and electronic locks were also be installed 
  • The 2nd floor lounge was renovated to create a flexible lounge including a large flat screen TV, soft seating, piano, and additional study spaces. A new kitchenette with two stoves and a sink was installed in the 2nd floor lounge during the summer of 2018. 

Furnald

  • In 2017, the south elevator was replaced.
  • In 2016, north elevator received full upgrade.

Hogan

  • Over 2010-11, renovations were made throughout the building to include all new flooring, paint, furniture and kitchen appliances. Additionally, the 7th floor became a six-person suite with its own bathroom, toilet and separate rooms.
  • Laundry room renovated and new equipment added.
  • Electronic locks added throughout building.

John Jay

  • In 2017, John Jay Lounge was updated and received fresh paint.
  • Over three summers (2014, 2015, 2016) John Jay received major renovations, including:
    • New single-use bathrooms; seven per floor, including one ADA bathroom per floor and in building lobby
    • New furniture in all rooms and floor lounges*
    • New LED lighting in all rooms and hallways
    • New doors with electronic locks
    • Recycling containers in all rooms throughout the building
    • Updated Recycling stations
    • New paint and flooring throughout
  • Separately, the overall building's incoming electric service was upgraded.

McBain

  • In 2017, new room furniture was provided.
  • In 2016, completed final phase of building-wise renovation with floors 2 and 3:
    • New single-use bathrooms; seven per floor, including one ADA bathroom
    • New lounges with new appliances, fixtures, and furniture*
    • New flooring in all rooms and hallways
    • New doors with electronic locks
    • Paint throughout 
    • Recycling containers in all rooms throughout the building
  • In 2015, a gut renovation of floors 4, 5 and 6 resulted in:
    • New single-use bathrooms, including one ADA bathroom per floor
    • Enhanced floor lounges
    • New doors with electronic locks in all rooms on these floors
    • New LED lighting throughout
    • New flooring, paint, and furniture were added throughout rooms in the building; also new carpet, paint and lighting to the hallways
    • New windows were installed throughout the entire building
    • Updated Recycling stations
    • New RHD apartment and office on the first floor
    • Fitness Center was moved to floor 4 into a new space
    • Student group study lounge was relocated to the previous fitness center on the first floor
  • In 2014, renovation of floors 7 and 8 included:
    • New single use bathrooms, including one ADA bathroom per floor
    • New flooring and ceilings in rooms
    • New flooring and lighting in hallways
    • New doors with electronic locks
    • Renovation of the floor lounge included new cabinets, countertops, and appliances
  • Additionally, the 1st floor was renovated with a new lounge, computer lab, study space, fitness room, and a laundry room for the building.  A GHD apartment was also added to the 1st floor.

Ruggles

  • New entry doors were installed during summer break, 2018.
  • In 2017, a convenience ramp was added to the building entryway.
  • In 2016, new windows added throughout building
  • In 2016, new rolling desk chairs added throughout building
  • In 2016, new electric stoves added in half of building
  • Complete basement renovation in 2013 to include fitness room, new laundry room, study room, common lounge with large flat screen TV, laundry room, a new trash/recycling room and a unisex ADA bathroom. View photos on the Ruggles building page

Schapiro

  • In 2017, desk chairs were replaced with new rolling chairs
  • Over 2011-2013, new flooring, paint, and furniture were added throughout rooms in the building; also renovated bathrooms and added new carpet, paint and lighting to the hallways in 2013
  • ADA bathrooms added throughout each floor of building
  • Complete renovation of first floor lobby, including lounge, new computer lab and study area in 2013. View photos on the Schapiro building page
  • In 2015, a new RHD office was added on the 1st floor.

SIC House

  • Gut renovation of former convent brownstones at 619 West 113th Street to house Special Interest Communities. View photos on the Special Interest Communities building page
  • Residence features a large kitchen and dining area for community meals

Wallach

  • Over 2012-2013, complete building renovation conducted, including new flooring and lighting, unisex private bathrooms, and large kitchen lounges on floors 3 - 8  
  • Refresh of main floor, including new ADA bathroom
  • New doors with electronic locks added throughout building

Watt

  • All residential rooms were newly equipped with rolling desk chairs in 2013
  • New windows installed throughout Watt Hall in 2011

Wien

  • Over the course of three summers (2016, 2017, 2018) the following renovations were performed on floors 3 - 9:
    • New flooring in single rooms
    • New vanities or new sinks and mirrors
    • Replacement of radiators
    • Entrance lighting was upgraded
    • New floor lounges on each floor including a kitchen with stove top, sink, and microwave
    • New Residence Hall Director office and apartment
  • In 2016, new furniture, including rolling desk chairs, added throughout*
  • During summers of 2009-10, major renovations included replacing the plumbing throughout the building to create a male and female bathroom on each floor (ADA-compliant bathrooms on most floors), as well as new hallway carpet and lighting.

Woodbridge

  • New furniture throughout building in 2013
  • 1st floor lobby updated to include refreshed painting and lighting, new ADA bathroom, and fitness room in 2013.

*All old furniture was recycled and repurposed.
