Guide to Living 2018

Make sure to review the Guide to Living on the Housing website and familiarize yourself with the policies and procedures for living in residence halls. You are accountable for all of the information outlined. Important updates this year that you should know:

  • Building lounges in the First-Year/South Field residence halls will no longer be reservable, with only a few exceptions. See the Common Areas and Usage Policy section for more.
    • Over the last academic year, we heard from a lot of students about the importance of more informal community space. With extensive feedback from Housing's Student Advisory Committee as well as a recommendation from the JED Social Connectedness committee, Columbia Housing and Residential Life agreed to implement the¬†change to help support this goal. As always, we welcome additional feedback and will assess how to continue to improve the space for residential students.
  • Columbia Housing, Residential Life, and Fire Safety officers will conduct Health and Safety checks in student rooms during the academic year (fall and spring terms) to insure that fire safety equipment is in place and not damaged. See the Fire Safety Policy section for more.
    • Random room checks may also be conducted during any Fire Drill that occurs for this same reason.
