Renovation Projects

Together with Facilities, Columbia Housing conducts annual upgrades and renovations of select residences. Highlights of past and planned projects are listed here by building.

Completed Projects

Overall

  • Wireless added across all buildings; in 2014, access upgraded in Watt, Woodbridge, and 627 West 115th Street to provide better service. Ethernet connections no longer required across Columbia Housing residences
  • Electronic locks in process of being installed across all buildings
  • Additional water filling stations were installed across several residences; visit the Sustainability page for a complete location listing.

47 Claremont

  • Elevator overhauled and modernized in 2013
  • Select bathrooms renovated and converted from tubs to shower stalls. General refresh work conducted in all rooms as needed including painting, floor refinishing, etc
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

600 West 113th Street

  • Kitchens renovated in 2013
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

Broadway

  • New cabinets and countertops installed in all kitchens in 2013
  • Over a 3-year period completed in 2010, new environmentally friendly wood-alternative flooring, paint and furniture were added throughout the building. Renovations also included the laundry room, floor lounges, and the 14th floor lounges with new furniture and flat screen TVs
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

Carman

  • In 2014, recycling and waste stations were added to each floor. Visit Recycling in the Guide to Living for new sorting and disposal protocols.
  • Full renovation of main lounge conducted in 2012, including full kitchen upgrade and living green wall
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

​East Campus

  • Every year, a floor within the building is identified for upgrade. In 2014, 20th floor renovations included new flooring and lighting in rooms and corridor, kitchen and bathroom renovations, new furnishings in the suite common areas. New doors and electronic locks were also be installed
  • In 2014, recycling and waste stations were added to the building. Visit Recycling in the Guide to Living for new sorting and disposal protocols and locations.
  • West Townhouses  updated with new doors with electronic locks
  • The 2nd floor lounge renovated to create a flexible lounge including a large flat screen TV, soft seating, piano, and additional study spaces
  • The 18th floor suites renovated including kitchen and bathroom work, new flooring, lighting, paint, and furniture in 2013
  • New doors with electronic locks installed on 18th floor and East Townhouses in 2013
  • New flooring, paint and furniture added to 6th floor in 2012

  • New flooring, paint, furniture and kitchen appliances added to 16th floor in 2011
  • The 14th floor was renovated to include all new flooring, paint, furniture and kitchen appliances in 2010
  • The 12th floor was renovated in 2009; 10th in 2008; and 8th in 2007

Furnald

  • All floor lounges were renovated throughout the entire building in 2012
  • All rooms were updated with environmentally friendly wood-alternative flooring and hallway flooring was also replaced in 2012

Harmony

  • Renovation of the 1st floor of Harmony Hall in 2010 created a six-person suite with four singles and one double room
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

Hogan

  • Over 2010-11, renovations were made throughout the building to include all new flooring, paint, furniture and kitchen appliances. Additionally, the 7th floor became a six-person suite
  • Laundry room renovated and new equipment added
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

John Jay

  • In 2014, renovation of floors 12, 13, 14, 15 included:
    • New single use bathrooms on each floor; one ADA bathroom on floors 12 - 14
    • New flooring in rooms and hallways
    • New corridor lighting
    • New doors with electronic locks
  • Separately, the overall building's incoming electric service was upgraded
  • ADA restroom added to building lobby
  • Full renovation of floor lounges completed throughout the building in 2012

McBain

  • In 2014, renovation of floors 7 and 8 included:
    • New single use bathrooms, including one ADA bathroom per floor
    • New flooring and ceilings in rooms
    • New flooring and lighting in hallways
    • New doors with electronic locks
    • Renovation of the floor lounge included new cabinets, countertops, and appliances
  • Additionally, the 1st floor was renovated with a new lounge, computer lab, study space, fitness room, and a laundry room for the building.  A GHD apartment was also added to the 1st floor.
  • Renovations to the McBain 2nd floor in 2011 included new paint and flooring throughout rooms and hallways
  • Renovations to McBain in 2010 resulted in changes to the floor plan, and all renovated rooms received new flooring and paint

River

  • In 2014, the building's boiler was replaced
  • All rooms were updated with environmentally friendly wood-alternative flooring and hallway flooring was also replaced in 2012
  • New lounge furniture added in 2012
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

Ruggles

  • Complete basement renovation in 2013 to include fitness room, new laundry room, study room, common lounge with large flat screen TV, laundry room, a new trash/recycling room and a unisex ADA bathroom. View photos on the Ruggles building page
  • Electronic locks added throughout building

Schapiro

  • Over 2011-2013, new flooring, paint, and furniture were added throughout rooms in the building; also renovated bathrooms and added new carpet, paint and lighting to the hallways in 2013
  • ADA bathrooms added throughout each floor of building
  • Complete renovation of first floor lobby, including lounge, new computer lab and study area in 2013. View photos on the Schapiro building page

SIC House

  • Gut renovation of former convent brownstones at 619 West 113th Street to house Special Interest Communities. View photos on the Special Interest Communities building page
  • Residence features a large kitchen and dining area for community meals

Wallach

  • Over 2012-2013, complete building renovation conducted, including new flooring and lighting, unisex private bathrooms, and large kitchen lounges on floors 3 - 8  
  • Refresh of main floor, including new ADA bathroom
  • New doors with electronic locks added throughout building

Watt

  • All residential rooms were newly equipped with comfortable desk chairs in 2013
  • New doors with electronic locks added throughout building
  • New windows installed throughout Watt Hall in 2011

Wien

  • During summers of 2009-10, plumbing was replaced and bathrooms were renovated throughout building to create a male and female bathroom on each floor, as well as new hallway carpet and lighting. Additionally, most floors in Wien now have two private, unisex bathrooms
  • New doors with electronic locks added throughout building

Woodbridge

  • New furniture throughout building in 2013
  • 1st floor updated to include refreshed painting and lighting, new ADA bathroom, and fitness room in 2013.
