Timeline and Steps

Check-Out Timeline

  • Non-seniors must check-out of rooms by noon on Saturday, May 16, 2014 or within 24 hours of their last exam, whichever comes first.
  • Seniors must check-out of rooms by noon on the day following Commencement: Thursday, May 21, 2014.
  • Resident Advisers must check out of rooms by noon on Friday, May 22, 2014.
  • No extensions are granted. Fees are assessed for late Check-Out.

Steps

  1. Complete online maintenance requests to resolve issues in your room.
     
  2. Inform your Resident Adviser of your confirmed departure date/time.
     
  3. Pack and remove all personal belongings from your room: double-check drawers, closets, and corners carefully. Items left behind in the room will be discarded. Do not leave personal belongings in the hallway unattended.
     
  4. Remove all trash to designated locations. Trash bags will be made available. Trash chutes are closed during the Check-Out period. Additional information will be provided vie email closer to check-out.
     
  5. Clean and sweep/vacuum your room.
     
  6. Clean and sweep/vacuum suites and common areas, where applicable.
     
  7. Remove all personal kitchen items/appliances.
     
  8. Clean kitchens and common areas, where applicable.
     
  9. Remove message boards, door tags, posters and tape from your door(s) and walls.
     
  10. Close and lock your window.
     
  11. Close and lock your door.
     
  12. Bring your signed Check-Out envelope, with any keys inside of the envelope, to the nearest Express Check-Out box, located at the security guard desk of each building or at the Hartley Hall Hospitality Desk. If you use your Columbia University ID Card as your key, simply deposit a signed Check-Out form into the Express Check-Out Box or with the Hartley Hall Hospitality Desk. Do not submit Columbia University ID card.
     
  13. If you are not returning in the fall, return your mailbox key to the Student Package Center in Lerner Hall.
     
  14. Take all food, laundry detergent, dish soap, clothes, books, TV and computers to the Give + Go Green stations. Before recycling or donating computers, permanently wipe your old hard drives using DBAN, a free file deletion program offered by CUIT.

  • Saturday, May 16           7:00 am to 12:00 noon
  • Wednesday, May 20      1:00 pm to 11:00 pm
  • Thursday, May 21          7:00 am to 12:00 noon
Broadway/Hogan Street Level Entrance:
  • Thursday, May 14           12:00 noon to 9:00 pm
  • Friday, May 15               12:00 noon to 11:00 pm
  • Saturday, May 16            7:00 am to 12:00 noon
  • Wednesday, May 20       1:00 pm to 11:00 pm
  • Thursday, May 21           7:00 am to 12:00 noon
Amsterdam Avenue, via the Hartley-Wallach Gate:
  • Thursday, May 14           12:00 noon to 9:00 pm
  • Friday, May 15               12:00 noon to 11:00 pm 
  • Saturday, May 16            7:00 am to 12:00 noon

Bin loans will be unavailable at the Hartley Hospitality Desk on the following dates and times due to Class Days and Commencement ceremonies taking place on South Lawn:

  • Monday, May 18              7:30 am  – 8:00 pm
  • Tuesday, May 19              8:00 am - 1:00 pm
  • Wednesday, May 20         6:00 am - 1:00 pm
